Music has always been a big part of my life – I’m very prone to making playlists for all kinds of different things. Elemental work, ongoing lengthy magical work, rituals, and all sorts of other things besides.
In the past few years, my listening has involved a lot of things with interesting lyrics. My tastes tend toward modern folk (and traditional folk) most of the time, with sidelines in early music, musicals, and things people introduce me to that catch my ear.
In the first category, here are some groups and musicians I reliably come back to again and again. They’re often groups and musicians with a strong sense of story, of character, of things happening.
- Great Big Sea
- Heather Dale
- Alasidair Frasier and Natalie Haas.
(I got to see them in concert, about a year ago, after loving his music for decades.)
- Tallis Kimberley
- Seanan McGuire
- Loreena McKennitt
- Ruth McKenzie
(her Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden is stunning music based on the Finnish saga)
- Maddy Prior
(especially her Year album)
- S.J. Tucker
- Steeleye Span
- The Wailin’ Jennys
